Bank of Sparta reorganized as the First Bank of Sparta with the establishment of a national banking system

1879

In August of 1879, John M. Holley Sr. & Emil Borresen establish a bank in La Crosse: the Holley and Borresen Firm

1883

The Holley and Borresen Firm incorporates as State Bank of La Crosse on July 28, 1883 with $50,000 in capital

1898

State Bank of La Crosse’s resources total $527,453 and is “one of the strongest financial institutions in the State” per the Milwaukee Sentinel

The turn of the century brings a new economic foundation for La Crosse, founded on manufacturing and agriculture, replacing the lumber industry

1917

State Bank of La Crosse purchases 401 Main St., then known as the McMillian Building, from The McMillan Co.

1929

The Great Depression batters the US economy. Two local banks liquify, but State Bank of La Crosse and First Bank of Sparta continue

1961

Bill Barney, future President of State Bank of La Crosse acquires controlling interest in the First Bank of Sparta

1967

Innovated and expanded drive-in banking using CC TV and pneumatic tubes called TV Drive-in Banking. Official Grand Opening August 5, 1966

Ground broken for new State Bank of La Crosse branch in Shelby, at 5501 Mormon Coulee Road

Lillian Hope Kumm named first woman director of State Bank of La Crosse

State Bank of La Crosse introduces TYME “Take Your Money Everywhere” automated teller machines at five locations in La Crosse

1981

State Bank of La Crosse and Alexander Grant co-sponsor a seminar “Women Informed: A Financial Seminar”

Russell Cleary elected Chairman of the Board of State Bank of La Crosse

1992

State Bank of La Crosse holds the first annual Chili Cook Off and raises $10,125 to help launch the new D.A.R.E. initiative by the La Crosse Police Department. Together we have raised over $250,000 for D.A.R.E.

1997

State Bank of La Crosse and First Bank of Sparta merge into State Bank Financial 2008 Kristine H. Cleary elected as first female Board Chair for State Bank Financial.
